This program begins with a look at Champlain’s early life, his first three expeditions to Canada. These include the formation of alliances with Native Americans to help develop the fur trade, the foundation of the colony of Acadia and the foundation of the colony of New France. The program ends with a look at the expansion and creation of non-French colonies and territories in North America from 1607-1635.

The Spanish, Portuguese and English had laid claim to some of this territory and France was now eager to claim her share. This expansion of empires would be motivated by wealth, politics and religion. Students will be introduced to the travels of the following explorers: John Verrazano, Jacques Cartier, Hernando de Soto, Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, Sir Francis Drake, Henry Hudson and SamueldeChamplain.
French Explorers: The Beginnings of French Exploration and Settlement in North America (1490-1564) (17:29)
This program begins by presenting the historical background that laid the foundation for French exploration in North America. It starts with a look at trade between Europe and Asia, the motivations for finding a sea route to ports in the Far East that would bypass the Silk Road are examined. The program then focuses on the early non–French contributions to world exploration.

Exploring the World: Ferdinand Magellan and the First Voyage Around the World (16:49)

In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Spain with a fleet of five ships to look for a faster route to Asia. During this three-year, 50,000 mile voyage, Magellan died and only one shop made it back to Spain. However, these men had circumnavigated the globe, proving once and for all that the world is round. This program examines the life and world of the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan. By viewing this video students learn many fascinating details about Magellan's life, the times in which he lived, and his famous voyage.

Disease and civil war weakened the Inca Empire before Francisco Pizarro and his men came to conquer. Conditions under Spanish rule were brutal, but the Inca staged one last rebellion to recapture their pride and ancestral lands.
Conquest of the Americas (23:26)
Travel back in time to Mexico and Peru to meet the Aztecs and the Inca. This program focuses on the motivation of Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro, two Spanish conquistadors. Students learn about the rise and fall of the Aztecs and the Inca in their struggle against European explorers.
